I have attended the Indian Game Developer Conference (IGDC) since 2019. The last two years have been virtual conferences due to the pandemic. In 2022, the conference returned to its in-person format in Hyderabad.
One of the most notable observations at the event was the significant presence of mobile game studios. This demonstrated the growing interest in the mobile gaming sector and the potential for further growth in the coming years. Seeing the diversity of games on display was impressive, ranging from casual puzzle games to complex multiplayer games.
Rockstar was another company that attracted a lot of attention at the event. They showcased their old games as they had no real reason to be present. Their presence was likely geared toward recruitment, which is always a plus for the Indian gaming industry.
Two games, in particular, caught the attention of visitors: “Mumbai Gullies” and “Occult Chambers.” The booths of GameEon and BornMonkee studios were constantly busy, showcasing the games and providing a glimpse into the future of Indian gaming. It was encouraging to see such an impressive lineup of new games from Indian developers.
The event also featured quite a few individual indie developers showcasing their games. This was an excellent opportunity for them to get noticed, build connections, and gain exposure. This clearly indicates that the Indian gaming industry is growing and attracting talent from all corners of the country.
The “State of the Industry” panel was another event highlight. The panel highlighted that there are now more than 400 game studios in India, indicating the industry’s potential for growth and the bright future ahead for the gaming industry in India.
The most memorable talk for me was one given by the head of CrazyLabs India about their Crazy Hubs accelerator program. This opportunity wasn’t available when I was an innocent college graduate! Maybe I’m not too old to take advantage of it now.
