The Zelda Media Circus Begins

The game formerly known as the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, has been released and has received great reviews from the critics. Fans have been waiting for six years for this sequel, and I’m happy that their expectations have been met.

What I’m not too enthusiastic about, however, is the upcoming deluge of articles, videos, and other media that will offer coverage of the game in excruciating detail.

I start the day by reading news from the gaming industry, and for the next few weeks, I expect to see around 30-40% of my feed filled with articles about Tears of the Kingdom. From guides to newly found secrets, sales figures, and the cringe “1000 things you don’t know about Tears of the Kingdom” style of articles – there’s no escaping the media circus for a while.

This is to be expected since this is one of the biggest games of the year, and no outlet can risk losing precious traffic by not competing with one another to offer detailed coverage.

Last year, it was Elden Ring which received similar treatment, and after a couple of weeks, I was sick at the thought of opening my news feed. There’s always the option to mute all articles containing the word “Zelda,” but a part of me is curious to see how big of a cultural phenomenon this game will become.

So, here we go again.
